As writers, it is our duty to tell and retell universal human stories in new, unique ways that titillate, illuminate, and resonate with contemporary audiences. The primary focus of the class will be advancing your current project through writing exercises, and sharing and discussion of scenes of your own choosing, and will culminate in a showcase reading with actors at ACT on the evening of June 17. In addition, through selected readings and focused writing exercises, we will explore ways to utilize our own unique experiences and views of the world to create works that are both vital and original. This intermediate class is the perfect opportunity to make headway on that play in progress, or start writing your next one.

This will be the first installment in a series of themed intermediate classes offered at ACT, so as you progress, you won't take the same class twice.

Instructor Bio
Stephanie Timm is currently playwright in residence at ACT Theatre. Most recently, she was nominated for a Gregory Award for New Century Theatre Company's premiere of "On the Nature of Dust." Her play "Crumbs Are Also Bread" was published in the recent Rain City Projects Manifesto Series, edited by Steven Dietz. Her plays have been produced and developed at Seattle Repertory Theatre, Portland Center Stage, Icicle Creek Theatre Festival, Kennedy Center, Lark Theatre, Boots Up Theatre Company, Washington Ensemble Theatre, and Live Girls! among others. Stephanie received her MFA from UC San Diego. Stephanie has taught playwriting at every level.

All profit from the APP will help to fund the fall 2011 Young Playwrights Program providing much needed assistance to at least one low-income Puget Sound school that could not otherwise afford the program.

The Young Playwrights Program, ACT's flagship education program, sends professional playwright/teaching artists into Puget Sound schools for ten weeks to teach the basics of playwriting. ACT's YPP equips participants with tools for creative self-expression, endowing them with self-confidence and the sense that their ideas--about themselves, their world, and the challenges they face--matter, and their voices will be heard.

"ACT has shown me how to take an idea and make a world."
-Ellie Drayton, Seattle Girls' School
