Intiman Theatre Artistic Director Kate Whoriskey announces a production shift in the previously announced 2011 Season. A Boy and His Soul, written and performed by Tony Award-nominated Colman Domingo and directed by Tony Kelly, will replace The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Chloe Moss's new adaptation of Washington Irving's American classic will now premiere during Intiman's 40th anniversary season in 2012.
"The change allows for a beautiful new play to join our slate next year and rounds out the season nicely with a continual exploration of themes on family," says Whoriskey. Winner of the GLAAD Media Award for Best Theater Broadway/Off Broadway and The Lucille Lortell Award for Best Solo Show, A Boy and His Soul extended two weeks beyond its scheduled run at The Vineyard Theatre last year.
The play follows the journey of Domingo's upbringing through a box of vinyl records discovered in the basement of his boyhood home. Detailing his childhood in a working-class background and the pivotal moment of coming out as a gay African-American man in 1980's Philadelphia, the tunes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer and more move him through a soundtrack of his past. Domingo was recently on Broadway in The Scottsboro Boys and previously received an Obie Award for his work on the Broadway musical Passing Strange. He also appeared on Broadway in Chicago and Well.
Dates for A Boy and His Soul, as well the calendar and casting updates for the full 2011 Season are listed below. Casting and creative teams for all shows will be announced at a later date.
