2018-2019 Season Announced At Seattle Children's Theatre Image

World-renowned arts organization for young people, Seattle Children's Theatre (SCT), is proud to announce their ambitious upcoming 2018-2019 lineup. The 44th season is brimming with a kaleidoscope of bold adaptations, timeless classics updated for new audiences, and provocative stagings of historical works for ages 3 to 9+. Ticket packages are on sale now with single tickets going on sale August 1, 2018.

The season opens with The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, a bright, colorful production featuring 75 lovable puppets, based on the beloved children's book by Eric Carle. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show also features several of Carle's other books, including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? This magical staging is bound to please the entire family.

Coming in October, SCT stages the powerful, inspirational story based on the boyhood of Muhammed Ali, And in this Corner: Cassius Clay, written by Idris Goodwin and directed by Malika Oyetimein, director of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings at Book-It Repertory Theatre last fall, and recipient of Theatre Puget Sound's Peoples' Choice Award for Outstanding Director at the 2017 Gregory Awards. Long before he was Muhammad Ali, 12-year-old Cassius Clay knew he would be a hero someday, no matter what anyone else had to say. In the nation's dark time of Jim Crow racism and violence, Cassius- with the support of his family, training from Officer Joe Martin, and his own hard work-fought his way onto the gold-medal stand and into the history books.

SCT closes 2018 with the bold new adaptation of The Velveteen Rabbit, directed by Purni Morell, acclaimed company leader of the London Children's Theatre and former artistic director of London's Unicorn Theatre. This is the tender story of the sweet friendship between a lovely, soft toy bunny and a young boy. Together, they are inseparable, and their adventures are many. Though the Bunny May not be real, the love between the two certainly is. So much so that the bunny believes himself to be an actual rabbit, making his ultimate sacrifice for his dear friend all the more poignant. This contemporary imagining of the beloved classic tale is full of the sweetness and magic of first friendships, unconditional love, and the pure joy and heartache of childhood.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, based on the book by Kate DiCamillo and directed by SCT's Artistic Director Courtney Sale, ushers in the New Year. An exquisitely fashioned toy china rabbit, Edward Tulane, experiences deep love and loss on a tumultuous 20-year journey. Edward, a self-important toy companion to a young girl, obsesses over his vast array of lovely outfits rather than forge new relationships. When unexpected forces come into play he discovers what truly matters; to love and to be loved.

In March 2019, SCT will produce Barry Kornhauser's delightful Balloonacy. In this wordless, situational comedy, The Old Man, who lives alone, prepares to celebrate his birthday. To his surprise, the solitary festivities are interrupted when a playful Red Balloon floats into his apartment, shaking up his normal routine. The Balloon teases and delights the Old Man, reminding him of the power of play, laughter, and friendship. Through spectacular physical comedy in the tradition of Charlie Chaplin, the two enjoy a surprising number of adventures. Balloonacy is bound to delight audiences ages 3 and older.

Rounding out the season is the enduring classic, The Diary of Anne Frank, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, adapted by Wendy Kesselman. This sobering true story of eight people living in hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland during World War II, as seen through the eyes of 13-year-old Anne Frank, comes to SCT as a co-production with Indiana Repertory Theatre. Anne's words reach out to us over the generations, inspiring us to never forget, to never give up on the power and goodness of the human spirit, and to always "fill life with living."

The 2018-2019 season is supported by generous contributions from season sponsors Microsoft, ArtsFund, The Shubert Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which will help the organization serve 130,000 annually and provide more than 60,000 free or significantly reduced tickets to children in the Puget Sound area.
