The hugely romantic Cyrano de Bergerac is given a Glaswegian heart in a new production of Edwin Morgan’s Glaswegian-Scots translation by Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill.
The swashbuckling and flamboyant Cyrano’s low self-image prevents him from revealing his love for Roxanne. He lends his poetic skills instead to the outwardly handsome Christian, who wins Roxanne’s heart through his passionate ghost-written letters. Throughout his adventurous life, Cyrano continues to put quill to parchment, risking his life in the process, to express his true feelings.
An epic ensemble of actors and musicians use Morgan’s rich Scots verse to create a fresh take on the enduringly popular period piece, first seen in the classic production by Communicado 25 years ago. Rostand’s original story was most famously given the Hollywood treatment in the Steve Martin comedy, Roxanne.
A National Theatre of Scotland, Citizens Theatre and Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh co-production.
A vivid and completely joyous event, Cyrano de Bergerac will be a celebration of theatre itself, and is presented by the Citizens Theatre at Tramway, The Lyceum and touring to Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.
