Seattle's Paramount Theatre will be home for the Seattle premiere of BLACK WATCH, the internationally acclaimed production from The National Theatre of Scotland. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 15th, beginning at 10am, for the April 25-May 5, 2013 performances.
Black Watch will be performed at The Paramount on a uniquely transformed flat floor configuration, to create a galley effect, with seating on both sides of the galley for an intimate and up-close experience, only providing for a seating capacity for 400, that invites the audience to be engaged participants in the telling of this story.
Arriving in Seattle after sold-out performances in South Korea, Chicago, Washington, DC, and New York, Black Watch, directed by John Tiffany (who recently won the Tony Award for the acclaimed Broadway musical Once) is based on interviews conducted by playwright Gregory Burke with former soldiers of the legendary Scottish regiment who served in Iraq. Viewed through the eyes of those on the ground, Black Watch reveals what it means to be part of the war on terror and what it means to make the journey home again.
This thrilling production incorporates video sequences, traditional Scottish song and music, with expressive choreography from Olivier Award winner Stephen Hoggett, who choreographed the Tony award- winning musical American Idiot. Black Watch creates a visceral, complex, and urgent piece of theater told from the point of view of the soldiers that the New York Times says is, "a necessary remainder of the transporting power that is unique to theater."
"Black Watch is an extraordinary piece of theater that causes us to think about the impacts of military service through the eyes of those people who put their lives on the line for all of us. It also challenges us to look beyond the headlines and into the hearts, minds and souls of those who serve. With this production, we can also encourage greater community dialogue around healing the wounds of war," states STG Executive Director Josh LaBelle.
STG will offer numerous community and patron events-many of which are presented free of charge-in association with the production, to open dialogue and encourage deeper exploration in to the numerous impacts of military service.
Black Watch has played to more than 200,000 people across three continents and has garnered 22 awards, including four 2009 Laurence Olivier Awards. This groundbreaking production runs April 25-May 5th 2013 and tickets go on sale March 15th and may be purchased online at stgpresents.org, at the Paramount Theatre box office, at the 24-hour kiosks at the Moore and Paramount theatres, or at Sonic Boom in Ballard. All tickets are $55.00, not including fees, and all performances are general seating.
