A truly unremarkable man and a chance encounter with a stranger, that may or may not be God, is the focus of a brand new production opening at Macrobert Arts Centre this September - The Rise and Inevitable Fall of Lucas Petit. The highlight of Lucas Petit's life is a weekly trip to the B&Q Café and that works for him. However, when he encounters 'a superior being', complete with a magical briefcase, his life is thrown into disarray, resulting in brushes with organised crime and disorganised religion!
A co-production between Sleeping Warrior Theatre Company, Macrobert Arts Centre, in association with Showroom and with support from Creative Scotland, this 21st century fable comes from the pen of award-winning writer/director Andy McGregor (Vinyl Idol - 2016, Love 2.0 - 2015). Originally conceived during his time at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), Lucas has been a persistent presence in Andy's subconscious since 2010:
'Lucas Petit has been in my head since 2010 when, as a student at the RCS, I staged an early version of the show. Though it was the first play I wrote for adults it was positively received and contains elements that feature at the heart of my work today - dark humour, heightened physicality, original music and a deep distrust of superior beings with magical briefcases. Six years later and Lucas is still in my head, so I'm delighted to be working with Macrobert Arts Centre and Showroom to bring his story to the stage. This show is a prime example of the kind of work Sleeping Warrior Theatre Company revels in making - high quality, accessible and fun theatre that says something about the modern world.'
