St. Agatha's Convent Orphanage, the 1980s. Four orphans who have been allowed to grow up in the full freedom of their imaginations in a convent attic. Under the influence of Beatrice, a mysterious girl who appears in the attic, the children start to believe that their father is 80s TV detective Remington Steele; that he will one day return for them.
The Bastard Children of Remington Steele was born out of the fusion of two truths. Old Trunk actor Sarah wistfully imagined that Remington Steele was her father as a child. This inspired Sadie to explore her own issues with her father - his presence, absence & legacy in her writing. The result is an enchantment for adults, with a dark underbelly.
The play can be seen in conjunction with its new "prequel" sister show The Secret Wives of Andy Williams, set in the same Orphanage in the 1960s. The shows can be seen at the same time on alternate days in the Belly Dancer. The plays also work as stand-alone pieces.
Old Trunk is playwright, actor, character comedian, columnist, and radio presenter Sadie Hasler (Russell Howard's Good News, BBC's Walk On The Wild Side, Rebecca Front's Little Cracker) and actor, dancer, improviser, and radio presenter Sarah Mayhew (The Weekly Show, Channel 4, Guerrilla Gig, BBC3, The Wright Stuff, Channel 5).
The Company has had an impressive first two years. They have twice been awarded Arts Council funding, found patrons in Jenny Eclair, Phill Jupitus, and Deborah Frances-White, curated the first dedicated theatre tent for Metal's Village Green Festival, represented the Arts at the House of Commons, and appeared in The Sunday Times Magazine as a company "making waves."
The Bastard Children of Remington Steele has been selected for Escalator East To Edinburgh. Each year Escalator, East to Edinburgh helps artists and arts organisations to raise their profile and perform to new audiences as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
