From Tuesday 1 until Saturday 5 March, Go Dance 16 presents over 45 dynamic groups with a different programme of dance each evening. From ballet to ballroom, lyrical to Latin and funky street to folk fusion, there's an eclectic mix of styles to be enjoyed.
For the dance festival's 9th year, a brand new host will be taking over compering duties. George Drennan, who has worked extensively in Scottish theatre and television credits include Taggart, Still Game and most recently the Irn Bru Train Advert, will be in charge of the smooth transition between acts while injecting some of his impeccable comic timing.
Creative Learning Manager, Alison Cowan, said: "Go Dance is a unique opportunity for participants off all ages, from 5 to 85, to share their passion for dance and celebrate their creativity. It has, over the years, established itself as a highlight in the Scottish dance calendar and we are thrilled to see some of our regular contributors return with brand new choreography as well as welcome a number of newcomers. We're also delighted to introduce a fresh face to the proceedings, our new host George Drennan."
Performing for the first time at Go Dance is the talented young people from Perform @ Theatre Royal, a programme of musical theatre weekly classes for young people age 8-17 years, with a show-stopping, all-singing, all-dancing piece inspired by the glitz and glamour of the 1920s.
Go Dance 16 is proud to welcome back to the Theatre Royal stage the Overdrive Dance Company. This unique all male youth dance troupe, formed as part of Matthew Bourne's New Adventures' Lord of the Flies legacy project, has been working together for 18 months and this is their second time performing at Go Dance. They have taken ideas about how we communicate and in particular used sign language as a stimulus to develop their choreography. With an original new work for Go Dance 16, Terra has a raw feel and explores ideas of our future world and its survival.
Scottish colleges are established members of the Go Dance family and this year five institutions will be showcasing the high calibre work of their students; Edinburgh based Dance For All, Dance Studio Scotland @ Glasgow Clyde College, Glasgow Kelvin College, JazzArt UK College of Performing Arts and West College Scotland. Add to the mix wonderful work from Scotland's finest community groups and schools, Scottish Ballet Youth Exchange Company, Indepen-dance, right2dance and world champions Urbaniks Street Skool, as well as new pieces from emerging young choreographers Leanne Dobbie and Clark Wallace.
1200 dancers, 45 groups, 5 nights, 1 stage - Go Dance 16, Scotland's biggest and best festival of community dance, is not to be missed!
