The Citizens Theatre has unveiled the cast for its production of A Christmas Carol, a bold, theatrical adaptation which captures the original heart of Charles Dickens' beloved tale.
By popular demand, the Citizens Theatre is bringing back the 5-star, sell out production which was first presented by the theatre in 2014. Young and old will be enchanted by the inventive storytelling, atmospheric set design and live music which has been refreshed for the performance space at Tramway. Audiences can expect the same distinctive style that has earned the theatre a reputation for unique and alternative Christmas shows.
Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill - alongside his frequent collaborator, composer Nikola Kodjabashia - will bring his inimitable style to this production, deploying a handpicked ensemble cast to present this much loved tale of hope, joy and Victorian charm.
Taking on the role of the miserly humbug, Scrooge, is Glasgow-born stage veteran Benny Young. Having recently starred in Midsummer at the Edinburgh International Festival, Benny's many stage credits include Hedda Gabler (Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh), Unfaithful (Traverse, Edinburgh) and Love With a Capital L (Òran Mór, Glasgow). We are delighted to welcome Benny back with his most recent appearance at the theatre being in Dominic Hill's 2017 production Hay Fever.
Citz favourite, Peter Collins, whose comic performances have been at the heart of the theatre's past three Christmas shows, returns to the company for his fourth festive season in a row.
Also returning to the Citizens stage for A Christmas Carol is Irene Allan, whose performance as the Witch in Hansel & Gretel (2016) was described by the Daily Record as "utterly fabulous" and John O'Mahony who last appeared in the epic Oresteia: This Restless House.
Andy Clark, who has regularly performed at the theatre since Vernon God Little in 2004 returns, having last appeared at the Citz in the 2017 studio show Lampedusa. Clark's past credits at the theatre also include The Libertine, Othello, The Bevellers, Peter Pan and Hamlet. Joining Andy will be Jess Murphy, last seen at the Citizens in the feel-good show The Choir.
Making their Citizens debut is Reuben Joseph, fresh from graduating from Clyde College and Elisa de Grey, who recently starred as Tinkerbell in Peter Pan at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre.
As part of the theatre's commitment to nurturing new talent, the Citizens is putting its two Actor Interns Malcolm Cumming and Anna Russell-Martin complete the cast. Malcolm's internship is funded by the Robertson Trust.
A Christmas Carol, will be presented by the Citizens Theatre at Tramway as part of its residency programme while its Gorbals home undergoes extensive refurbishment. The performance is sponsored by Urban Union, the company behind the Laurieston Living regeneration project.
Family tickets and a range of discounts are available including £5 tickets for Gorbals Card holders and unemployed; and low ticket prices for schools, groups and our Deaf Theatre Club audience. A very successful Pay It Forward scheme in 2017 will also enable the theatre to welcome a number of local schools to see A Christmas Carol who may otherwise have not been able to go to the theatre this festive season.
