When Broadway star Jerry Travers comes to Europe he meets Dale Tremont and initially things look promising for their budding romance. However, due to a misunderstanding Dale believes that Jerry is actually married to her friend and calls off the relationship. Shenanigans ensue and a predictable but uplifting storyline unfolds.
The two leads Alan Burkitt and Charlotte Gooch are phenomenal talents. With such a focus on the choreography of the show it would be easy to assume that the acting and singing quality would lessen slightly but that is not the case at all. Both actors are masters of all three. The songs weren't quite to my taste but are fitting with the 1930s style and they are well known classics. The dancing is obviously what Top Hat is really known for and it did not disappoint. The cast are incredibly talented and the big tap scenes appeared to be the favourites amoung the audience.
What really blew me away with this production of Top Hat was the set and costume design. The sets were absolutely stunning and I loved that the regular theatre curtain had been replaced with a gold one. I never saw Top Hat when it was in the West End but I would struggle to believe that the production had been scaled down at all because I can't imagine how much more they could add! The costumes were gorgeous and overall the show was just beautiful.
Top Hat is on tour around the UK.
