Do you ever go see a show and know you will be on your feet for a standing ovation the minute the last chord sounds? I have now seen Come From Away 7 times including last year at the Van Wezel and it simply never gets old. It is powerful. It stirs your soul. As a director, I long for the day to produce it at my theatre but until then, I will just continue to enjoy every time I have the privilege of watching it. Last night at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, audiences were treated to an unforgettable evening filled with warmth, humanity, and the power of community in one of my all-time favorite musicals, "Come From Away." This remarkable production, which has taken Broadway by storm since its debut in 2017, tells the true story of how the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, opened its arms to thousands of airline passengers stranded during the events of September 11, 2001. A poignant tale of kindness in the face of adversity, "Come From Away" is a celebration of humanity that resonates deeply in today’s world.
The story begins on the fateful day of September 11, 2001, when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in Gander due to U.S. airspace being closed. As the town of Gander, with a population of just 7,000, swelled to accommodate 7,000 “plane people,” the residents quickly sprang into action, showcasing the best of human nature. The musical artfully weaves together the stories of various characters—both locals and passengers—highlighting their fears, their triumphs, and their shared humanity.
One of the most remarkable aspects of "Come From Away" is its ensemble-driven narrative. There are no true lead characters; instead, the performers seamlessly shift between multiple roles, embodying the diverse tapestry of people affected by the events. This ensemble approach creates a sense of unity on stage, as each actor contributes to the collective story. The synergy among the cast is palpable, with each performer complementing one another’s energy and performance, enhancing the emotional weight of the narrative.
The musical's score, written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, is a masterclass in blending folk melodies with contemporary musical theatre styles. The vocal performances were nothing short of stunning, with each cast member showcasing their vocal prowess while simultaneously serving the story. From the soaring harmonies of the ensemble numbers to the tender solos that pulled at heartstrings, the musicality of "Come From Away" leaves an indelible mark on the audience. Standout performances from the ensemble showcased not only their vocal skills but also their ability to convey deep emotion, capturing the essence of their characters with authenticity and grace.
The set design, a simplistic yet powerful creation, played a vital role in establishing the ambiance of the show. With minimalistic elements that suggested Gander’s airport and the homes of the townsfolk, the design allowed the performers to shine. The clever use of props, combined with fluid choreography, helped transition between scenes seamlessly. The simplicity of the set reinforced the themes of the musical—it's not about the grandeur of the surroundings, but rather the richness of human connection and compassion that unfolds within them.
The direction of the show masterfully guides the production, balancing moments of levity with the profound emotional weight of the narrative. It captures the essence of community spirit, emphasizing the importance of compassion and understanding in times of crisis. The choreography adds layers to the storytelling, with lively ensemble movements that reflect the bustling atmosphere of Gander while also highlighting tender moments of connection.
What makes "Come From Away" particularly resonant is its underlying emotional message. It serves as a reminder of the goodness that can emerge from the darkest moments in history. The show encourages audiences to reflect on their own capacity for compassion and kindness, urging us to reach out to those in need, regardless of the circumstances. By the end of the performance, there was a palpable sense of camaraderie among the audience, a shared understanding of the power of community in a world that often feels divided.
As the last chord struck the audience joined me in a heartfelt standing ovation that was a testament to the impact of the performance. The cast took their bows, beaming with pride and gratitude for the story they had shared. "Come From Away" is not just a musical; it is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of coming together in times of crisis.
"Come From Away" is a theatrical triumph that showcases the beauty of ensemble storytelling, stellar vocal performances, and an emotionally resonant narrative. It is a show that will leave you inspired, reminding us all that even in the face of adversity, love and kindness can prevail. I have seen it seven times but for those who have not, I encourage you to experience this heartfelt musical —it is a journey worth taking.
