Starring Burt Lancaster, best known for his roles in Elmer Gantry and Atlantic City, Birdman of Alcatraz is a unique biographical story of a man sentenced to life in solitary confinement who combats loneliness by nursing an ailing bird back to health. After publishing a book on bird diseases from within his jail cell, he meets and marries a fellow bird-enthusiast, Stella. Stroud's road to happiness then takes a turn as he is unexpectedly transferred to Alcatraz. Series guest curator Jon Burlingame is the nation's leading writer on music for film and expert on the legendary film composer, Elmer Bernstein. He is the author of four books on music in motion pictures, television, and recording in addition to -his biography of Elmer Bernstein. Burlingame regularly writes for Daily Variety and the Los Angeles Times and has written for The New York Times, Washington Post, New York Daily News, Newsday, Premier, Emmy, and The Hollywood Reporter.
