Fiddler on the Roof, a gem from Broadway's Golden Age of musicals, moves to Solvang to launch PCPA's summer season. It plays from June 13 through July 6, performances are at 8pm. Fiddler is a celebration of life and its challenges. Trying to balance life - like a fiddler on a roof - Tevye attempts to hold onto his traditions despite sweeping social change that is upsetting his family values while threatening his town's very existence.
The musical is directed by Roger DeLaurier and features resident equity artist
Erik Stein as Tevye the dairyman who must find suitable husbands for his daughters and has ongoing respectful debates with the God. DeLaurier said that Fiddlerappeals to our core values and addresses the collision of generational expectations and exasperations.
PCPA's creative team includes original choreography by
Michael Jenkinson, musical direction by
Callum Morris, scenic design by De
Anne Kennedy, costume design by Frederick P. Deeben, lighting design by Jennifer 'Z' Zornow, sound design by Elisabeth Rebel and stage manager is Heather Patterson.
In addition to
Erik Stein* in the role of Tevye, the cast includes Kitty Balay* as Golde, Karin Hendricks as Tzeitel,
Elizabeth Stuart* as Yente/Fruma-Sarah,
Michael Jenkinson* as Motel, Leo Cortez as Mordcha, and Peter S. Hadres* as Rabbi.
George Walker will cover the role of Perchik which was played during the spring run by
Quinn Mattfeld*.
Fiddler on the Roof first appeared on Broadway in 1964 and swept the Tony's with nine "Best" awards including Best Musical for a score that features "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I were a Rich Man," "Sunrise, Sunset," and "Do You Love Me."
The film adaptation was released in 1971 and scored three Oscars including Best Score Adaptation for
John Williams. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Picture.
Fiddler on the Roof is based on Sholem Aleichem stories with Book by
Joseph Stein, Music by
Jerry Bock and Lyrics by
Sheldon Harnick.
