Fresh off its National Tour PCPA puts its spin on Legally Blonde, the Musical playing tonight, July 27 - August 19, in the Solvang Festival Theater. It is directed and choreographed by Michael Jenkinson.
It's an inspiring story wrapped up in a perfect pink production package with an ensemble of fabulous dancers and singers that will blow Central Coast audiences away. The star of UCLA's Delta Nu, Elle Woods, proves once and for all that girl power can change the future! Against the odds, she moves to the head of class, and the top of the firm, with her charm, Chihuahua and the classic bend and snap! Elle realizes, and America will too, that brain power is as potent as being a blonde in a pink dress!
Jessica Crouch, (National Tour All Shook Up) will play Elle Woods. The cast also features Elizabeth Stuart* as Paulette, Karin Hendricks as Vivienne Kensington, Connor Bond as Warner Huntington III, Chris Cooke as Emmett; Michael Tremblay as Professor Callahan and Andrew Philpot* as UPS Man/Pforzheimer.
Director/Choreographer Michael Jenkinson said that he's excited to work on a new musical that has had a far shorter public life than recent projects he's done for PCPA, including West Side Story and Hairspray. He's also proud of the important messages this musical brings. "It has the ability to let us see ourselves as more than what we are and how we can change the perceptions of ourselves. Too often we judge a book by its cover, we bring our stereotypes and prejudices to bear on an individual or situation." He said that Elle Woods' self-empowerment is motivation to empower men and women alike.
Assisting Mr. Jenkinson are Callum Morris, Musical Director; DeAnne Kennedy, Scenic Designer; Emily DeAngelis, Costume Designer; Jennifer 'Z' Zornow, Lighting Designer; Elisabeth Rebel, Sound Designer; and Assistant Choreographer, Glen M. Snellgrose II. Stage Manager is Christine Collins*.
Based on Amanda Brown's 2001 novel, the first film, starring Reese Witherspoon, was released later the same year. In 2003, Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blue presented a singing and dancing version. The musical stage version premiered in San Francisco in 2007 before transferring to Broadway. The week ending on June 24, 2007, the Broadway production grossed in excess of $1-million for that week. It has repeatedly toured throughout the US and it played for nearly 3 years on London's West End where it was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2011. The musical has performed in South Korea, The Philippines, and throughout Western Europe and Australia.
