Sharon Harris Warrick's gripping prison drama comes to life on stage at Out of Box Theatre starting August 14, directed by Paris Crayton III. The play is centered on the story of Debra, a mother imprisoned for committing an unthinkable crime.
Debra, a private and practical woman, is difficult for the other inmates to connect with, including the next cell inhabitants Regina and Myra. Coming to terms with her new cellmate Liz - an young, middle-class Caucasian woman - proves to be a new challenge for Debra. Even Dr. Marlowe, the prison's therapist, has a hard time reaching Debra or even understanding her motives. As the inmates struggle to come to terms with the consequences of their decisions in quarters designed to be too close for comfort, each woman bares a piece of herself in the attempt to cope.
The layers are peeled away and Debra's story is revealed. In an effort to protect her son Keith, who - like many urban youth - has paid more attention to the lessons of the street than of his mother, she is driven to commit an act of desperation that affects everyone around her in a dramatic ripple effect.
Spend some time in her shoes. Hear her story and consider - what would you do to save your child?
