In the tradition of "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" Saturday, June 11th, will see a grand improvisational battle of the troupes. Santa Barbara's Instant Karma Improv Comedy is teaming up with members of Ventura Improv Company to face off against LA's Impro Theatre for a one-night-only Improv Comedy Battle Royale!
Impro Theatre, the improvisational troupe that brought the hilarious Jane Austen Unscripted and the bizarre and twisted Twilight Zone Unscripted to Santa Barbara, joins local improv artists on stage for an evening of traditional improvisational games and challenges.
The two teams face off with quick wit and competitive ingenuity for three judges, who, as moderator Dan Gunther points out, have no real power in deciding a winner. The purpose of improvisational play is to hone the collaborative efforts of the improvisers. Watching talented and practiced improv players create a narrative is often hilarious, and always impressive. Suggestions and ideas are tossed back and forth, and while it may seem like a random swirling of haphazard miscellaneous, the improvisers are building a spontaneous narrative, one unexpected moment at a time. It's a thrilling, energetic genre of performance that highlights the fluid process of collaborative storytelling.
While improv theatre is inherently funny in its ability to catch both performers and audience members by surprise, Gunther explains that it can still reveal wonderful, fascinating aspects of humanity through strokes of inspiration and imagination. It's a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience; especially for those who have never taken an improvisation class or seen a traditional improv-type show, Improv Comedy Battle Royale is an excellent opportunity to see how the process takes shape on stage.
