The Theatre Group at SBCC has announced that after their three year modernization project, the Theatre Group is back, bigger and better than ever. They are thrilled to welcome audiences back to the newly remodeled, technically sophisticated, totally accessible and energy efficient, Garvin and Jurkowitz Theatres and our exciting 2012-13 season.
July 13-28, 2012, we will open the season in the Garvin Theatre with the smash hit musical comedy, AVENUE Q. With music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, and based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, AVENUE Q is the winner of the Tony Award "Triple Crown" for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. It tells the laugh-out-loud story of a recent college grad who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on AVENUE Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. The Broadway debut from one of the authors of Book Of Morman, AVENUE Q mixes puppets with human characters to teach lessons that are definitely not for children. Contains adult language and material. Avenue Q will be directed by Rick Mokler.
In the fall, Theatre Group will present Tracy Lett’s “turbo-charged tragic-comedy,” AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY is the most celebrated new American play in decades. It will be directed by Katie Laris and performed in the Garvin Theatre, October 19-November 3, 2012. A vanished father. A pill-popping mother. Three sisters harboring shady little secrets. When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites after Dad disappears, their Oklahoman family homestead explodes in a maelstrom of repressed truths and unsettling secrets. Mix in Violet, the drugged-up, scathingly acidic matriarch, and you've got a major new play that unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family. Contains adult language and material.
On March 8-23, 2013 Noël Coward’s classic comedy PRESENT LAUGHTER will be presented on the Garvin stage. Fresh off a highly successful Broadway revival, PRESENT LAUGHTER is one of Noël Coward's funniest and most delightful comedies. The devastatingly handsome and thoroughly charming matinee idol Garry Essendine struggles to plan his upcoming trip to Africa, his elegant New York apartment is invaded by a love struck ingénue, an adulterous producer and a married seductress, not to mention Garry's estranged wife and a crazed young playwright. Just before Garry escapes, the full extent of his misdemeanors is discovered and all hell breaks loose. PRESENT LAUGHTER will be directed by R. Michael Gros.
The final play of the season will take place in the intimate Jurkowitz Theatre. The romantic new comedy, BECKY’S NEW CAR, by Steven Dietz, April 26-May 11, 2013, is directed by Katie Laris. Have you ever been longed for a new life? Well, Becky Foster has. She’s trapped in middle age, middle management and in a middling marriage—with no prospects for change on the horizon. Then one night a socially inept and grief-struck millionaire stumbles into the car dealership where Becky works, and she’s offered a chance at a brand new life…and the audience is offered a chance to ride along in a way that most plays wouldn't dare.
Season tickets range from $52-$76. Call the Garvin Box Office at 965-5935 for a free season brochure.
