Athol Fugard’s incandescent and thought-provoking "The Road to Mecca" comes to San Francisco’s Z Below. Obie Award winner Timothy Near and the team behind the stunning sold-out run of Fugard’s "A Lesson from Aloes" at Z Below, which won a San Francisco Bay Area Critics Award for Best Entire Production and received the San Francisco Chronicle’s highest rating, reunite for this luminous new production. In "The Road to Mecca," an artist fills her garden with fantastical life-sized sculptures representing an imaginary Mecca. Inspired by South Africa’s Helen Martins, whose home “The Owl House” is now a cultural site, this personal and thought-provoking play examines the fight to create art in the face of oppression.
