San Jose Playhouse presents Man of La Mancha. A Musical Play by Dale Wasserman based on Miguel de Cervantes Don Quijote de la Mancha Music by Mitch Leigh and Lyrics by Joe Darion. June 4 through June 26. (Previews on June 2 and 3) Performances run Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30pm. During the days of the Spanish Inquisition, failed writer and actor Miguel de Cervantes and his manservant survive as tax collectors but are soon imprisoned after being accused of crimes against the church. Facing the wrath of their fellow inmates, Cervantes must persuade the mob not to burn his prized manuscript by performing it for themthe tale of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre. Man of La Mancha is a triumph of creative imagination and stagecraft. Stephen Guggenheim*

Miguel de Cervantes/Don Quixote/Alonso Quijana
Stephen Guggenheim is an accomplished opera singer having sung leading operatic roles throughout the world. His career highlights include singing the roles of Tito in La Clemenza di Tito and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with the San Francisco Opera, Don Jose in Carmen with L'Opera de Lyon and on tour to Guam and Japan with the San Francisco Opera and Rodolfo in La Boheme with the San Francisco Opera in Japan. Stephen originated the title role in Thea Musgrave's Simon Bolivar with Virginia Opera as well as at Royal Albert Hall in London for the BBC Proms with the BBC Scottish Symphony. In 2014, Stephen made his Carnegie Hall debut. Other engagements have included singing the roles of Canio in I Pagliacci; Il Duca in Rigoletto, Gustavo in Un Ballo in Maschera and the title roles in Werther, Don Carlos and Les Contes des Hoffmann, among many others. In musical theatre, Stephen was honored as Best Leading Actor by BroadwayWorld.com for his performance as Bill Todson in Thanks for Playing...The Game Show Show! He is a private voice teacher and is Guggenheim Entertainment's Resident Musical Director. Most recently, Stephen performed at 3Below in Sondheim on Sondheim and as Moishe/Marvin in The People in the Picture. He was last seen in over 400 cinemas nationwide when The MeshugaNutcracker, the musical he co-wrote and musical directed, premiered with Fathom Events. * Member AEA

JEFF LAGRECA (Sancho Panza) is a writer,director, teacher, actor and improviser who splits time between New York City and Los Angeles. He has studied and worked with Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond, (30 Rock, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Second City) Adam McKay, (Anchorman, The Big Short), Todd Stashwick, (12 Monkeys) Mick Napier, (The Annoyance Theater, Chicago) Matt Besser, Matt Walsh (VEEP), Ian Roberts, (Upright Citizens Brigade) Gary Austin, (The Groundlings) Hilary Stern, (The Groundlings) Tom Chalmers, Tom Bolster, (Gotham City-Groundlings East) , Armando Diaz (The Magnet, UCB) Kevin Mullaney, (Upright Citizens Brigade), David Fino (Brooklyn Puppet Collective), Ali Faranakhian, (SNL, The PIT), Jay Rhoderick (Burn Manhattan) and Kevin Scott (Second City, Centralia). He is a writer/creator of Minimum Wage, which made its Off-Broadway debut in NYC, Bijou and the Bots, The Gargoyle Garden, Peter & the Werewolf and other short films, sketch and corporate shows. He has just completed work on his first full length YA novel.

Recent engagements for Sandra Bengochea include directing Opera San José's productions of Tosca, Carmen, and La Cenerentola and performing the role of Ilia in the company premiere of Mozart's Idomeneo, where she was praised by The Opera Critic: "Ilia's lilting lines are a perfect match for Bengochea. She sings with a relaxed optimism that matches Ilia's resilient demeanor."
