White, opening tonight Saturday Nov. 28, 8pm (Press opening) and run through December 24, 2015 at Z Below in San Francisco's Mission/SOMA district. These stories are by New York chroniclers known for their reflections on life in the New York of their time, with a range of New Yorkers from the common to the eccentric. Their stories give us the poetry of the city and its uncelebrated people living on the margins.

BIOS:
Damon Runyon ("Dancing Dan's Christmas") was best known for his short stories celebrating the world of Broadway in New York City that grew out of the Prohibition era. To New Yorkers of his generation, a "Damon Runyon character" evoked a distinctive social type: gamblers, hustlers, actors, and gangsters. His distinctive vernacular style is known as "Runyonesque": a mixture of formal speech and colorful slang, almost always in present tense, and always devoid of contractions. The musicalGuys and Dolls is based on his short stories. Runyon was also a well-known newspaper reporter, covering sports and general news for decades.
Joseph Mitchell ("The Cave Dwellers") was best known for the work he published in The New Yorker. He is celebrated for his carefully written portraits of eccentrics and people on the fringes of society, especially in and around New York City. A great chronicler of city life, and a journalistic prodigy, he is also known for suffering from writer's block for several decades. Mitchell's influence endures with today's generation of New York chroniclers. His short story "The Cave Dwellers", from Up in the Old Saloon, was first published in the Christmas Eve, 1938 edition of The New Yorker as "Christmas Story". "Mitchell was genuinely interested in his subjects as human beings, remarkable because they so vividly demonstrate that one way or another we are all a little weird. " Charles McGrath, also of The New Yorker
E.B. White ("Christmas and Relative Pronouns", "Notes and Comments" - [12/17/32, The New Yorker]) worked for the United Press and the Seattle Times before eventually joining the staff of the fledgling New Yorker magazine in 1927; this is also where he met his wife, Katharine Angell, then literary manager of The New Yorker. White's essays for The New Yorker quickly garnered critical praise. Written in a personal, direct style showcasing his wry humor, his witty pieces contained musings about city life, politics, and literature. Considered one of the great stylists of the English language, White co-authored the classic The Elements of Style, as well as writing the supremely elegant children's books, Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little. In 1978, he received a Pulitzer Prize for the body of his work.
