Broadway By The Bay, the Peninsula's premier musical theatre company recognizes the second year of performances at the company's new home, the historic Fox Theatre in Redwood City and the 47th season in their history. The season will feature three full-scale productions and the return of the hit Broadway By The Year® series. Hairspray runs through tonight April 22 and tickets as well as season subscriptions are available now by calling 650-579-5565 or at www.broadwaybythebay.org.
Leading the cast of the Tony-winning Broadway musical is Victoria Morgan as Tracy Turnblad, the loveable plus-size heroine. Morgan won rave reviews for her performances in the role with two previous productions at Musical Theatre West in Long Beach and Contra Costa Musical Theatre, where she received the "Shellie Award" for Outstanding Female in a Musical. Playing opposite Morgan will be Cole Grissom in the role of Edna Turnblad, Tracy's kooky mother.
Other key cast members include Danny Cunningham as Wilbur Turnblad, Tony DiCorti as Link Larkin, Michael Scott Wells as Corny Collins, Courtney Hatcher as Amber Von Tussle, Lisa-Marie Newton as Verna Von Tussle, Erica Richardson as Motormouth and Lamont Jones as Seaweed.
Hairspray will be directed by Amanda Folena, Broadway By The Bay's new Artistic Director, who came on board with the company in January.
With book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman, Hairspray delights audiences by sweeping them away to 1960's Baltimore, where Tracy Turnblad wins a spot on a local TV dance program and overnight finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. The show, which won 8 Tony's including Best Musical, includes many crowd-pleasing numbers, such as "Good Morning Baltimore," "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and the show-stopping "You Can't Stop The Beat."
Hairspray will play at the 1250-seat Fox Theatre in the heart of downtown Redwood City. The historic theatre is located in close proximity to a wide selection of popular restaurants and bars, as well as several nearby public parking areas and a Cal Train stop, making it convenient for theatergoers to enjoy pre-show dining or post-show libations.
Broadway By The Bay, the largest musical theatre company on the Peninsula, has won numerous awards, including over 45 Theatre Critics Circle Awards, and has garnered acclaim throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as a destination for professional-quality theatre. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Amanda Folena and Executive Director Jim Gardia, Broadway By The Bay produces three full-scale musicals and one intimate Salute To Broadway series each season.
