Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Human Be-In, which took place on January 14, 1967 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) announced today that single tickets are now on sale for the upcoming production of the critically acclaimed musical, A Night with Janis Joplin (June 7-July 2, 2017). Tickets ($19-$105) may be purchased online at act-sf.org or by calling 415.749.2228. Casting for A Night with Janis Joplin will be announced at a later date.
Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock 'n' roll. The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock.
Fueled by such unforgettable songs as "Me and Bobby McGee," "Piece of My Heart," "Mercedes Benz," "Cry Baby" and "Summertime," A Night with Janis Joplin, written and directed by RAndy Johnson, is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences-icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock and roll's greatest legends.
A.C.T.'s production of A Night with Janis Joplin will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the legendary Summer of Love in San Francisco, when nearly 100,000 young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, turning San Francisco into the epicenter of a cultural phenomenon. Led by San Francisco Travel and the California Historical Society, the City of San Francisco will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love with special events, major exhibits, and concerts throughout the city.
