At the Eureka Theatre (215 Jackson Street, between Front and Battery) Map It!
One Night: Monday, February 22 at 7:00 pm
Theatre Rhinoceros and Grooviness Productions invite you to attend a reading of Hot Summer Night, Jerry Metzker's impertinent and queerified adaptation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with a gleeful salute to Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods and a brazen nod to The Brothers Grimm, DC Comics, The Wizard of Oz, Homer, Christianity, cross-dressing, leather dykes and gender-blind casting.
The play embellishes the complications of Shakespeare's four lovers, as well as the political intrigue between Theseus and Hippolyta. Meanwhile, a dedicated and amateurish Acting Company, "The Boys in the Band" players, pursues a quest to produce with an all-male cast of six, a Sondheim musical perfect for a Summertime Festival. Everyone ends up in the mysterious, magical and busy woods of Athens where the feuding fairy queen and king have taken up temporary residence and a host of wanderers further complicates matters. Charles Ludlum and Charles Busch fans welcome.
Directed by Laura Lundy-Paine, Artistic Director of Virago Theatre, Hot Summer Night features a cast of 11 reading over 30 roles. Cast members include Ryan Drummond*, Elias Escobedo*, Michaela Greeley, Lol Levy*, Laura Lowry*, George McCrae*, Dennis McIntyre and Shannon Nicholson.
