DENISE PERRIER
Bessie, Dinah, and Me...Denise Perrier
Denise Perrier brings blues/jazz icons Bessie Smith & Dinah Washington back to life in her fabulous show, "Bessie, Dinah and Me...Denise Perrier." Denise combines elements of her Bessie Smith portrayals ("In the House of the Blues", "Blues in the Night") and her very successful Dinah Washington tribute ("Unforgettable") in a show certain to enchant fans of blues and jazz. Bessie Smith (the Empress) and Dinah Washington (the Queen) are two of music's most influential and popular figures, and Denise does justice to both. She recreates these great artists both in appearance and sound. The San Francisco-based vocalist, blessed with a rich contralto voice, can belt out the blues like Bessie, and then, in her Dinah persona, melt your heart with a poignant ballad. A formidable artist in her own right, Denise also presents favorites from her own versatile repertoire and CDs: The Second Time Around (Chez Perrier/2009), Live at Yoshi's: Blue Monday Party (Chez Perrier/2004), East Meets West (Chez Perrier/2002) and I Wanna Be Loved (Chez Perrier/1997). This is a show certain to please audiences who love music presented with drama and verve.

JACQUI NAYLOR AND HER TRIO
Jacqui Naylor is not an easy artist to categorize. There are times when she performs straight-ahead vocal jazz, but at other times she favors more of a folk-rock/adult alternative approach. Depending on the mood she is in at a given moment, the northern Californian can bring to mind anyone from Cassandra Wilson or British jazz vocalist Claire Martin to Sarah McLachlan or Shawn Colvin -- she is as comfortable among jazz improvisers as she is in the singer/songwriter world. During one of her live performances, Naylor has no problem singing smoky jazz one minute and folk-rock or adult alternative the next -- and there are times when she blurs the line between the two.
Naylor, who is very jazz-friendly but far from a rigid jazz purist, brings a long list of influences to her introspective work -- influences ranging from Billie Holiday, June Christy, and Nina Simone to Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant, Carole King, and Sheryl Crow. That is an unlikely combination of influences, certainly, but it is one that works well for Naylor (who has used all of them to fashion a personal, recognizable style of her own). Naylor has a highly diverse repertoire; on-stage, she is likely to perform a Tin Pan Alley standard right after something by the Rolling Stones or Talking Heads (in addition to performing songs of her own). Naylor is not an overly aggressive or forceful type of singer; she favors subtlety, restraint, and understatement, which are things that Holiday and Christy (one of the goddesses of jazz's cool school) were both masters of.

DIANE SCHUUR
Vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the '40s and '50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents' generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and '60s. In a recording career that spans nearly three decades - and includes two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations - Schuur's music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape.
Some Other Time, Schuur's February 2008 Concord release, is a recording of songs by jazz artists whom she first discovered via her parents during her childhood and adolescent years. The album features songs by George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Rogers and Hammerstein and more. Long regarded - and sometimes criticized - as an artist who has walked a tightrope between jazz and pop, Schuur has the unwavering statement about her commitment to the jazz tradition and its influence on her artistic sensibilities.
Diane Schuur runs for 6 performances only Wednesday-Friday, October 27-29 at 8:00 PM; Saturday, October 30 at 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM; and Sunday, October 31 at 7:30 PM.
