Spreckels takes audiences to Italy's Tuscan countryside for this musical based on the 1950s novella by Elizabeth Spencer. Gene Abravaya directs this multiple award-winning musical for the main stage with performances from Oct. 9 to Oct. 25.

A wealthy Southern American woman and her daughter, Clara, spend a summer together in Italy. The trip takes a turn after Clara and a young Italian man fall in love. When a family secret is revealed, Clara's mother is forced to reconsider hopes, regrets and Clara's future. "The Light in the Piazza" is a sophisticated and heartwarming musical about courage, trust, faith and love.

"The Light in the Piazza" received six Tony Awards, including Best Original Score from Adam Guettel. Soprano Jennifer Mitchell of Woodside, who received critical acclaim for her portrayal as Julie in the 2015 Spreckels Theatre Company production of "Carousel," stars in as Clara. The cast also features Alexander Belmont, Jacob Bronson, Eileen Morris, Dwayne Stincelli, Barbara Ann McFadden, Amy Marie Webber, Tariq Malik, Steven Kent Barker, Jennifer Schwarz, Riz Gross, Abby Chambers, Len Improta, Adrian Boyer, Hannah Barton, Benjamin Sweeney Acedo and Casey Rusher. This main stage production features the new Paradyne projection system, developed by Spreckels Performing Arts Center, combining still images and animations to create multiple backdrop effects - creating a visual aesthetic that's exciting and visually surprising for audiences of the 21st Century. This show contains adult themes and ideas and is recommended for ages 13 and older.
