Sadly, BLUES IS A WOMAN'S beloved guitarist Pat Wilder had an unexpected and serious illness. Although she will recover it will not be in time to join her fellow cast members onstage in August at the Custom Made Theater.
Fortunately BLUES IS A WOMAN is happy to welcome the supremely talented and gifted guitarist Shaunna Hall (George Clinton & P-Funk, 4 Non Blondes, Electrofunkadelica) to our cast! Shaunna is from San Francisco and studied songwriting at Blue Bear School of Music with Bonnie Hayes. She was the founding guitarist and songwriter of 4 Non Blondes ( Spaceman, #39 Billboard; Morphine & Chocolate - from the Multi-Platinum Interscope Records release, Bigger, Better, Faster, More! ) and the first female guitarist of George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. Shaunna spent 10 years touring the USA, Canadian, Europe, Australia, Japan, Fiji, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Africa, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Japan, and Indonesia with P- Funk, and began working under the name Electrofunkadelica, a studio project releasing "Electrofunkadelica: e3+FUNKnth = music for the body, mind & soul" in 2006. The Electrofunkadelica live performances feature Hall on guitar, electronic sources including looping samplers, Kevin Carnes on drums, Stephan G. as VJ, and occasional guest vocalists or instrumentalists. Projected visual imagery plays a large part in the show, with VJ mixing, animation and film. Shaunna continues to tour the world with George Clinton and Parliment/ Funkadelic aka The P-Funk Allstars. She has been a panelist for for the 2000 and 2005 Rockrgrl Conference, has been a volunteer performer for Bread and Roses since 1997, and is a member of ASCAP.
BLUES IS A WOMAN celebrates women in the blues from Ma Rainey to Bonnie Raitt and beyond. Fired up after a round of sold-out previews in Northern California (Kuumbwa, Freight & Salvage, SFJAZZ, Cinnabar Theater) in which audiences leapt to their feet with mid-show standing ovations, this new theater/concert piece will have a month long theatrical run at Custom Made Theatre in San Francisco.
With a powerful ensemble of musician/actors (Pamela Rose, Tammy Hall, Ruth Davies, Shaunna Hall, Daria Johnson and Kristen Strom), the women onstage perform musical treasures punctuated by storytelling and rare historical film. The work shines a light on Black experience, how it informed all American music, and follows the fierce, passionate women who popularized the Blues. The audience is transported back to the early roots of America's most enduring art form, and travel through the decades in a vibrant explosion of concert and history.
BLUES IS A WOMAN was written by San Francisco musician Pamela Rose, with creative direction by Jayne Wenger. This co-production with Custom Made Theatre is the official theatrical debut of Rose's compelling new piece, a hybrid of theater and concert. The show will run from Thursdays through Sundays throughout the month of August.
