Shakespeare Santa Cruz has given theater-lovers a feeling of hope this holiday season as they raised $416,417.00 in a drive to save their theater.
The company had announced that they had to raise $300,000 in order to save any hope for a 2009 season. Usually the University of Santa Cruz are able to absorb any losses made by the theater but this year they were unable to provide such a cushion.
Shakespeare Santa Cruz officially exceeded their goal of $300,000.00, showing a wonderful display of hope and community cooperation.
The high numbers were reached with small donations, most in the $50 to $100 ranges, proving that a little help can go a long way. The internet also assisted in the drive, allowing the public to donate easily and quickly from their own homes.
The proposed 2009 season which includes "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Julius Caesar", and "Shipwrecked!" is designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences in order to continue on this path of flux.
The company plans to do whatever they can in order to keep the playhouse alive.
