SEETheatre, Spencer Entertainment Enterprises, presents Jennifer Haley's The Nether, performing April 14 through 29 at Center Stage Theater in Santa Cruz.

The award-winning drama, The Nether, takes place in a virtual wonderland that provides total sensory immersion. One only needs to log in, choose an identity, and indulge in every desire. But when a young detective uncovers a disturbing brand of entertainment, she triggers an interrogation into the darkest corners of the imagination. Winner of the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, Los Angeles Ovation Award 2012, and the ATCA Francesca Primus Prize in 2014, The Nether is both a serpentine crime drama and a haunting sci-fi thriller that explores the consequences of living out our private dreams.

The play deals with the sensitive issue of child abuse, and is recommended for mature audiences only. "However, there is a twist," says director Brian Spencer. "The 'abuse' takes place in virtual reality, so nothing actually happens to any 'real' person. It begs the question, when is non-reality actually reality and where do we draw the line?"

The investigation that takes place in the play leads the audience deep into a realm where people can live a life without consequence. "This is a disturbing play, but also one which rewards by generating conversation on the topic and providing much food for thought," explains Spencer.

The Nether will feature local actors April Bennett, Nick Bilardello, Andrew Davids, Olivia Gillanders, and Robert Gerbode.

Tickets are $22 general, $20 students/seniors, available at spencerentertainment.brownpapertickets.com.

Note: For mature audiences only.
