San Jose Stage Company was honored at the the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards on March 26, 2018 at the SFBATCC Excellence in Theatre Gala. The Stage was presented with the prestigious Paine Knickerbocker Award for their continuing contributions to Bay Area theatre.
Named after the San Francisco Chronicle's former theatre critic, this award is given to an organization that has steadily produced powerful work that shapes the Bay Area theatrical landscape and community as a whole. Now in its 35th Season, San Jose Stage has earned a reputation for artistic excellence through imaginative and edgy theatrical experiences that spark ideas and dialogue with the audience.
"The Stage is not afraid to challenge, take risks, and always strives to maintain the highest of professional and artistic standards...." David John Chávez, a member of SFBATCC and the American Theatre Critics Association, stated while presenting the Paine Knickerbocker Award. "The Stage has assured Bay Area audiences that they will be a large part of the Bay's theatrical fabric for a very long time, setting the standard for others who create art for the Silicon Valley and beyond."
In addition to the Paine Knickerbocker Award, The Stage was honored to take home the award for Entire Production - South Bay for The Toxic Avenger, giving them their third consecutive win for this category (previously won for their productions of Valley of the Heart and Death of a Salesman.)
