Hailed as one of the smartest, wittiest contemporary dramas in recent history, Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts, makes its Bay Area premiere tonight, October 17- November 10, 2013 at San Jose Rep. Press Opening Night is Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.

Winning the hearts and minds of Broadway, this award-winning show is poised to continue the critical acclaim and box office success of San Jose Rep's One Night with Janis Joplin. The New York Times calls Next Fall, "...artful, thoughtful and a very moving story ... and says it "speaks in a quiet voice of momentous things." The show is directed by Associate Artistic Director Kirsten Brandt (The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus, Legacy of Light, Groundswell, Splitting Infinity,This Wonderful Life, and Rabbit Hole) and stars renowned Bay Area actors Danny Scheie (Triumph of Love) and James Carpenter, last seen on San Jose Rep's stage in The Dresser.

Luke and Adam are the contemporary "Odd Couple" in this poignant and intelligent love story. Adam is a responsible but neurotic atheist, while Luke is an impulsive, underemployed actor and a devout Christian. Their commitment is typical of anyone who's ever been in love and knows that every relationship requires a leap of faith. But when the unforeseen happens, family and friends' deeply held beliefs collide. Through pain, laughter and honesty, they attempt to live at the intersection of faith, love and acceptance.

"This is a beautiful story infused with humor that will challenge our audiences, celebrate our diversity and have us all thinking about our own journeys of tolerance and unconditional love," says Rick Lombardo, San Jose Rep's Artistic Director. "I've been looking forward to presenting this thought-provoking show since we announced it last year. It's both hilarious and heartbreaking and reveals the underlying truth that we love people both because of - and in spite of - who they are."

Scheie is intrigued to embody the role of Adam. "Perhaps one of the allures of acting for everyone, professional and amateur and child alike, is the adventure of becoming someone wildly different than one's self," Scheie explains. "The chance to play a gay, middle-aged urban neurotic, frankly down-the-line severe casting-to-type, is in my career uncharacteristically exotic. I am thrilled and honored at being invited by Kirsten Brandt and San Jose Rep to take this ride within."
