San Francisco Playhouse Artistic Director Bill English and Producing Director Susi Damilano are elated to announce that their 2014-15 season will kick off with Ideation, the play by Bay Area playwright Aaron Loeb that broke all box office records during its world premiere last year as part of San Francisco Playhouse "Sandbox Series."
Today it was also announced by Theatre Bay Area that Ideation is the recipient of this year's Glickman Award, an honor chosen by a panel of top Bay Area theater critics and presented to the author of the best play to have its world premiere in the Bay Area the preceding year. Since that world premiere was part of the "Sandbox Series" at San Francisco Playhouse, the next step to presenting the play on The Playhouse main stage is especially fulfilling.
"It is beyond thrilling to see one of our 'Sandbox' projects win the Glickman Award," enthused
Bill English, Artistic Director of San Francisco Playhouse. "We have always been blown away by Aaron's capacity to speak so profoundly to the moment in which we live. It has been a rare privilege to serve as the springboard for Ideation and everyone at San Francisco Playhouse enthusiastically looks forward to continuing the creative process on this play with Aaron."
Playwright
Aaron Loeb adds: "San Francisco Playhouse has been my theatrical home for nearly seven years. Ideation is our third play together and
The Playhouse has been instrumental in its development. The play is truly 'home grown' here in the Bay Area, originally created in the Just Theater's New Play Lab, then further developed at the Bay Area Playwrights Festival.
Bill English and
The Playhouse were there at each step, guiding the play toward its eventual world premiere in their 'Sandbox Series.' The Glickman Award is a wonderful acknowledgement of our collaboration -- one for which I could not be more grateful. I am absolutely thrilled that our next step will be opening the 2014/15 season of San Francisco Playhouse."
Created to honor playwright and screen writer
Will Glickman, the
Will Glickman Award is presented annually to the author of the best play to have its world premiere in the Bay Area during the preceding year. The winner is chosen by a panel of top Bay Area theatre critics. The goal of the fund is to encourage new plays and their production as invaluable investments in American theatre. In 2004, Theatre Bay Area, the nation's largest regional theatre service organization, took over administration of the award. This is the 31st award.
Ideation is a psychological suspense thriller, which focuses on a group of corporate consultants working together on a mysterious and ethically ambiguous project. As the lines between right and wrong are blurred, these characters must navigate the cognitive dissonances and moral dilemmas to decide for themselves if everything is as it really seems. It will run at San Francisco Playhouse, 450 Post Street September 23 through November 8.
The complete 2014-15 San Francisco Playhouse season will be announced in May.
