For its holiday feature, the San Jose Rep will present This Wonderful Life, a visually stunning stage adaptation of the 1946 Frank Capra classic film It's a Wonderful Life. In this theatrical twist, San Jose Rep's associate director Kirsten Brandt directs actor Dan Hiatt, who plays all 35 characters in a one-man tour de force. The show runs from Saturday November 24 through Sunday December 23 at the San Jose Repertory Theatre in downtown San Jose.
"Hiatt, a nationally acclaimed actor, superbly plays every character, each of whom has a distinctly different personality. There's George Bailey the Bedford Falls family man who dreamed of greatness, Mr. Potter the evil miser who delights in people's misfortune, Clarence the dotty angel-in-waiting who saves George's life, Mary the devoted wife and mother who appreciates his sacrifices, and daughter Zuzu who brings George back home with her petals. The story takes us through George Bailey's life – his youth, his years with the Savings and Loan, the accounting error that forces him to the edge of suicide on a snowy bridge one Christmas Eve, his vision of life if he'd never existed, and how he found his way back home," explain press notes.
This Wonderful Life was conceived by Mark Setlock and written by Steve Murray. The creative team includes scenic designer Robin Sanford Roberts, costume designer Brandin Barón, lighting and projection designer David Lee Cuthbert, and sound designer Jeff Mockus. The production stage manager is Laxmi Kumaran.
This Wonderful Life runs Saturday November 24 through Sunday December 23 at the San Jose Repertory Theatre (101 Paseo de San Antonio, San Jose CA).
