To celebrate the opening of The Color Purple at the SHN Orpheum Theatre, Humphry Slocombe and SHN have collaborated on a limited edition ice cream flavor inspired by the 2016 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival.
Inspired by and named after the musical's title, Humphry Slocombe's Color Purple flavor is a hibiscus blackberry ice cream-made with organic blackberry puree and whole, dried hibiscus flowers-which yields a beautiful, deep purple color. Though simplistic and minimalistic in ingredients, the flavor-much like the stripped-down musical-produces complex and thoroughly balanced notes of berry and herbs that linger after the last bite.
Humphry Slocombe Co-Founder, Executive Chef, and Expert Baker Jake Godby explains that The Color Purple's title-and ice cream flavor-refers to a pivotal moment in the story when the show's mainstay, Celie, is asked by rabble-rouser Shug Avery if she had ever taken the time to notice what little things God does to show us that it loves us.
"I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it," Godby says, directly quoting Shug Avery.
"It's a different way of reminding Celie to stop and smell the roses," Godby continues. "Celie is forced to admit that she has, in fact, never observed these things. This admission changes her life-and ours."
The limited edition ice cream is available at both Humphry Slocombe locations-2790 A Harrison Street (Mission Location) and 1 Ferry Building (Ferry Building Location)-throughout the month of May. A prominent ice-cream producer in San Francisco since 2008, Humphry Slocombe's previous SHN show-inspired flavors include "Wicked," "Cabaret," "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," and "Into the Woods."
