Earlier this week, SFGate released a 100-year look at the theatres and marquees of the San Francisco area. The look included 75 photos spanning the past 100 years and captions placing each one in San Francisco's theatre history.
The photos include both black-and-white and color photos, with images that show the exteriors of theatres, the marquees, and the interiors of theatres. Some theatres are shown several times at different points in the 20th Century.
The history begins with a look at Market Street featuring photos of the Embassy and Strand Theatres in the late 1930s. It also goes even further back to show Market Street during the Depression. Market Street's Fox Theatre is also highlighted, including a look at the theatre when it was partially demolished during the 1960s.
More recent images include ones that show the Castro Theatre, the Grand Theatre, Granada Theatre, and the Golden Gate Theatre, with images from the '70s and '80s.
