SF Recovery Theater Marks Its 20th Season With REFLECTIONS IN BLACK 2018 Image

On June 1, 2018 The SF Recovery Theatre will commemorate their 20th Annual Season with a new production of Reflections In Black 2018, a collection of scenes by African American writers, featuring an African American cast, which examines what it means to be Black in the United States. Being staged in the heart of the Tenderloin at PianoFight, 144 Taylor Street, Reflections In Black 2018 runs every Friday and Saturday at 7pm, from June 1 through June 16. Tickets are free to Tenderloin residents, or $20 for the general public and can be reserved at www.pianofight.com.

Reflections In Black 2018 is an outgrowth of the mission of SF Recovery Theater, to provide a safe place for those that are suffering, their family members and those in recovery. With Reflections In Black, SFRT focuses on creating a safe space to examine issues facing African Americans around the country at large and in San Francisco specifically. With this production, SFRT is striving to include as much of the Mid-Market and 6th Street corridor population as well by organizing groups from neighborhood organizations to see the play free of charge, and by casting actors who are currently or have lived in the Tenderloin.

Reflections In Black 2018 is a mix of original monologues and devised plays, and excerpts, songs and adaptations of plays and essays by prominent African American writers. Local playwright Geoffrey Grier's monologues from "The Spot" are woven throughout the evening, which includes an excerpt from Charles Fuller's "A Soldier's Play"; a devised piece centering on African American activist and artist Paul Robeson; "The Militant Preacher" by Ben Caldwell; "Salaam Huey, Salaam" extracted from an essay written by Marvin X, and adapted for the stage by Ed Bullins; and an excerpt from "KUDZU 2012" by Tracy Baxter, and work from contributing writer, Richard May. (Line-up subject to change)

SF Recovery Theater is committed to assisting those in need to build healthier lives and enrich the city's culture. Engaging creatively to help battle substance abuse, mental health issues, or housing problems, SFRT produces the ongoing Night at the Blackhawk, an original jazz musical reflecting on the lives and stories of the artists, musicians and residents that lived in the shadow of the Black Hawk Jazz Club; and the Mr. Geoffrey's Show, a local online show that focuses on the issues, concerns and events of the Tenderloin community. SFRT is proud to celebrate its 20th Season with Reflections In Black at PIanoFight.
