Off Broadway West Theatre Company ("OBWTC") proudly announces their upcoming production of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party. An 8:00 pm curtain time opens the play on Friday, May 22, with the preview scheduled for Thursday, May 21, and two Sunday Matinees, at 3:00 pm, on May 31 and June 14. The play closes June 27 and will be performed in our usual home at The Phoenix Theater, 414 Mason Street, Suite 601, San Francisco, a small 55-seat venue between Geary and Post, next door to Ruby Skye.
The Birthday Party takes place in a sleepy seaside English town in Meg and Petey's boarding house. The quiet routine is disrupted by the appearance of two ominous strangers, Goldberg and McCann. Stanley, their gloomy, long-time lodger, is unnerved by their sudden arrival. As Meg, and her neighbor, Lulu, organize a surprise birthday party for Stanley (who insists it's not his birthday), the menacing two men circle like sharks. After several drinks and party games, the evening descends into a shadowy nightmare full of lies and perverse motivations. Excuses, alliances and the truth hastily shift in this dark-comic masterpiece penned by Mr. Pinter early in his career.
