The Russian village of Anatevka comes to life once more as Novato Theater Company stages Fiddler on the Roof this spring! One of the most popular musicals in history, the Jerry Bock-Joseph Stein-Sheldon Harnick masterpiece plays tonight, March 26-April 26 at the NTC Playhouse, 5420 Nave Drive in Novato. It is directed by award-winning Pat Nims (2013 BroadwayWorld SF Best Director), and choreographed by Kate Kenyon.

Fiddler on the Roof is the story of family, love, change and tradition. The NTC production brings new life and inspired vision to beloved Fiddler classics like Sunrise Sunset, If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker, To Life, and many more.

Based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, who himself had to flee the tumultuous times of early 20th Century Imperial Russia, Fiddler captures the heart of a people forced, seemingly forever, to be on the move. Michael Walraven stars as the iconic Tevye the Milkman. The NTC production is a tip of the chopra to master story-teller Aleichem. Set in 1905, Fiddler brings Aleichem's tales to life. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters-and each one's choice of husband-and with mounting persecution of Jews by the Tsar.

The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. Fiddler held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned four Broadway revivals, a highly successful 1971 film adaptation, and the show has enjoyed enduring international popularity.
