NCTC Presents Drama Desk Award Winning HOWARD CRABTREE'S WHEN PIGS FLY Image

In May, New Conservatory Theatre Center presents the musical extravaganza Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly. Told in high school he'd be big in show biz only "when pigs fly," Howard follows his heart anyway and creates the musical revue of his dreams. What they didn't know was he has a special talent to transform the most mundane objects - from shower curtains to garden hoses - into a showstopping costume spectacle. You can't help but pig out on this gleefully subversive over-the-top musical.

When Pigs Fly runs May 11 - June 10, 2018. Opening Night is Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 8pm. Tickets are $35-60 and available at nctcsf.org, emailing boxoffice@nctcsf.org or by calling (415) 861-8972.

Inspired by an actual conversation Howard Crabtree with his high school guidance counselor- wherein Howard was told he'd put on stage shows "when pigs fly"- Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly won both the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical Revue and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. Unfortunately, Howard Crabtree passed away before opening night of his final production. When Pigs Fly is a hilarious, musical testament to one man's pursuit of his dreams- no matter how many things go wrong along the way. When Pigs Fly premiered Off-Broadway at the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre in 1996 and was originally presented by NCTC in 2003. This production will be directed by NCTC founder and Artistic Director Ed Decker.

Playwright Howard Crabtree was a prolific costume designer, cabaret performer and creator. His musical revue Whoop-Dee-Doo! won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Costume Design and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Costume Design. His final production, When Pigs Fly, was posthumously awarded the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical Revue, the Outer Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical Revue, and the Obie Award for Special Citations.

Playwright/Lyricist Mark Waldrop is an award-winning director and writer with writing credits including Whoop-Dee-Doo!, A Christmas Carol, Luck!, and Bunnicula. His work on When Pigs Fly earned the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical, and Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Director of a Musical and Outstanding Lyrics.

Composer Dick Gallagher was an accomplished pianist and composer who received the Richard Rogers Production Award for his work as composer on the musical revue What Not. Among his many composer credits are Have I Got a Girl for You: The Frankenstein Musical, Whoop-Dee-Do!, That's Life, and the titular song for the Charles Busch comedy You Should Be So Lucky.

The cast of When Pigs Fly features David Bicha, J. Conrad Frank, Philippe Gosselin, CHRIS PLANK, and Ryan Vásquez.

The creative team of When Pigs Fly includes choreography by Jayne Zaban, scenic design by Devin Kasper, costume design by Keri Fitch, Wes Crain, and Jorge Hernandez, sound design by Christopher Sauceda, prop design by Ting Na Wang, wig design by David Carver-Ford, and stage management by Emilio Racinez.
