Mark Routhier To Step Down As Artistic Director of Magic Theatre

Magic Theatre, San Francisco's premiere home for new plays, announced that Mark Routhier will step down as the Director of Artistic Development in September 2008 to focus on his growing national directing career.   A national search for his replacement begins immediately.  Routhier has been on the Magic staff for six years starting as Literary Manager before taking on the position of Director of Artistic Development for the past two seasons.  He will be remounting his world premiere production of Yussef el Guindi's Jihad Jones and the Kalashnikov Babes at Los Angeles Theater Center with Golden Thread Productions and is slated to direct Conor McPherson's The Seafarer at Southern Rep in New Orleans this season.  Routhier will continue to serve on the Executive Committee of the National New Plays Network (NNPN).  He will return to the Magic this winter to direct a new play workshop and will produce and direct Magic's 2008-09 Science on Stage New Play Event.  Previously at the Magic, he directed the world premiere of Kevin Fisher's Monkey Room, last season's Magic Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Initiative production, a new play development program that Mr. Routhier has managed since its inception in 2004.  His Magic Theatre new play development credits include directing Marisa Wegrzyn's Hickorydickory, Rajiv Joseph's Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, and Annie Baker's Nocturama as well as overseeing all of Magic's developmental reading and workshop programs.

"This is bitter-sweet news for me.  We are sad to see Mark go, but I couldn't be more thrilled for the opportunities that have opened up for him in the last year," said Artistic Director Loretta Greco.  "As a director who got her start in arts administration, I recognize the momentum of a directing career on the rise and I cannot wait to have him back at the Magic as a visiting artist."

Mark Routhier has served as Magic Theatre's Director of Artistic Development overseeing the company's new play development programs.  His recent directing credits include Kevin Fisher's Monkey Room (Magic Theatre), Yussef el Guindi's Jihad Jones and the Kalashnikov Babes (Golden Thread Productions), and Michael Hollinger's Opus at Orlando Shakes.  He spent last summer at the Kennedy Center, where he directed a workshop of Lia Romeo's play, Green Whales, for the University Playwrights Workshop, dramaturged Samuel Brett William's play, The Revival, for Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, and was a guest director/mentor for the Playwright's Intensive.  He is slated to direct Conor McPherson's The Seafarer at Southern Rep in New Orleans this season and will be remounting his production of Jihad Jones at LA Theatre Center with Golden Thread in November.  His previous Bay Area directing credits include The Bone Man of Benares and 70 Scenes of Halloween (Encore Theatre); Cartoon (Impact Theatre); someguy, Drunken Grownups, Iphigenia and Other Daughters (Mettle Theatre); Cowboy Mouth (MGTC); and Exit the King (Am. Citz. Theatre.  Workshops include Carly Mensch's All Hail Hurricane Gordo (University Playwright's Workshop, Marin Theatre Co.), Eisa Davis's Bulrusher (SF Stage & Film), Marisa Wegrzyn's Hickorydickory and Rajiv Joseph's Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (Magic Theatre).  He also directed readings of Rick Mitchell's Brecht in L.A. and Michael Hollinger's Opus in the Harriet Lake Festival of New Plays at Orlando Shakes.  Dramaturgy includes Lucy Thurber's Monstrosity (Encore Theatre Company), Mike Geither's Stars Fell All Night (BAPF), Tim Lord's The Secret History of Caleb Caan (University Playwrights Workshop, Stanford). His short plays, Spotter and Leaving, premiered in Best of Playground and S.o.S. II at AlterTheatre.  Mark serves on the Executive Committee of the National New Play Network (NNPN).  He received his MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU.
