After coast to coast critical acclaim, Marga Gomez comes to The Marsh Berkeley with Latin Standards, her 12th and final work in the solo performance genre, named a "Critic's Pick" by The New York Times, which hailed its "winning heart and humor." Gomez explores the loving, funny, and true story of perseverance and creative addiction passed down from immigrant father to lesbian daughter as she describes life as the child of a blustery Cuban showman. Between vivid portrayals of characters from 1960's Manhattan to present day San Francisco, Gomez ponders the ballads penned by her late father Willy Chevalier: a comedian, producer, entrepreneur, and composer of dance tunes steeped in jealously and obsession. Latin Standards will be presented October 5-November 17, 2018 with performances 8:00pm Fridays and 8:30pm Saturdays at The Marsh Berkeley, 2120 Allston Way, Berkeley. For tickets ($25-$35 sliding scale, $55-$100 reserved) or more information, the public may visit www.themarsh.org or call The Marsh Box office at 415-282-3055 (open Monday through Friday, 1pm-4pm).

Described by the San Francisco Examiner as "Elegantly structured and expertly staged, it's both touching and funny," Latin Standards has been hailed for its "Delicious details" (Arizona Daily Star), with the San Francisco Chronicle calling "Gomez's characterizations impossible to resist." Latin Standards premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater's "Under the Radar Festival" in 2017 and went on to play hit runs in Chicago, Los Angeles, Tucson, and San Francisco.

Marga Gomez (Writer/ Performer) is known for her work in solo performance and stand-up comedy, and for being one of the first openly lesbian performers in the nation. Named by SF Weekly as one of "2016's Artists to Watch," Gomez's comic style has been described as "deliciously cheeky and incendiary" by The New York Times and "salaciously surreal" by the San Francisco Chronicle. She has appeared on LOGO's "One Night Stand Up," Showtime's "Latino Laugh Festival," Comedy Central's "Out There," and HBO's "Comic Relief." Her acting credits include Off-Broadway and national productions of The Vagina Monologues sharing the stage with Rita Moreno and Vicki Lawrence, and roles in HBO's "Tracey Takes On..." and Warner Bros. films "Batman Forever" and "Sphere." Gomez also teaches solo performance in classrooms and online, and is a tenured Artist-in-Residence at Brava Theater in San Francisco.

David Schweizer (Director) has been developing and directing new live performance work for 40 years, from his New York debut at Lincoln Center with a radical revival of Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida to his return there with Richard Rodney Bennett's The Mines of Sulfur for New York City Opera. Throughout the years he has directed a vastly eclectic mix of theatrically innovative work in a wide range of styles and venues, including his notable Obie Award-winning collaboration with composer/performer Rinde Eckert (And God Created Great Whales, Horizon). His work with performance and solo artists also includes Marga Gomez (Los Big Names in New York City and Love Birds in San Francisco) and Mike Albo, whose Off-Broadway hit The Junket recently concluded a run at the Lynn Redgrave Theater Off-Broadway.

The Marsh is known as "a breeding ground for new performance." It was launched in 1989 by Founder and Artistic Director Stephanie Weisman, and now annually hosts more than 600 performances of 175 shows across the company's two venues in San Francisco and Berkeley. A leading outlet for solo performers, The Marsh's specialty has been hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as "solo performances that celebrate the power of storytelling at its simplest and purest." The East Bay Times named The Marsh one of Bay Area's best intimate theaters, calling it "one of the most thriving solo theaters in the nation. The live theatrical energy is simply irresistible."
