Magic Theatre introduces an award-winning Scottish voice to the Bay Area with Linda McLean's new play Any Given Day running from March 29-April 22. Having received its world premiere in 2010 at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland, Any Given Day will make its American debut under the direction of Bay Area director Jon Tracy. A portrait of modern, urban life and the fleeting nature of love and happiness, Any Given Day is comprised of two connected stories that take place at 2pm in opposite ends of Glasgow that explore how, in a moment, everything can change.
Linda McLean is currently under commission to The National Theatre of Scotland, Magnetic North (UK), and Traverse Theatre (UK) and is Chairwoman of the Playwrights' Studio Scotland.
Any Given Day began its journey to America as part of Magic's Virgin Play Series, an annual reading series of plays that are at various stages of development. Loretta Greco, Magic Theatre's Producing Artistic Director said, "The workshop reading only heightened that sense of a thrilling theatrical voice unfolding with one-of-a-kind characters caught in the universal conundrum of compromised existence. The play's seemingly impossible yet palpable sense of hope captured my heart. Its structure also intrigued me. Like her play, it was obvious within a few seconds that Linda was a kindred spirit and a great match for Magic. We are thrilled to be launching the US premiere of a play and playwright we know American audiences will be blown away by."
The cast of Any Given Day is made up of James Carpenter (Titus Andronicus and Macbeth, Cal Shakes; Three Sisters, Berkeley Rep), Amy Kossow (The Lily's Revenge, Magic Theatre; The Pastures of Heaven, Cal Shakes), Daniel Petzold (The Tempest, SF Shakes; Forever Never Comes, Crowded Fire and The Salt Plays, Shotgun Players) and Stacy Ross (Titus Andronicus and Macbeth, Cal Shakes; Major Barbara, San Jose Repertory Theatre) as well as Magic Theatre newcomer Christopher McHale (Broadway: Joe Turner's Come and Gone, The Iceman Cometh, King Lear).
Any Given Day features scenic design by Michael Locher (Goldfish, Mrs Whitney, Or, Magic Theatre; Happy Days, Guthrie Theater; Trouble in Mind, Yale Repertory Theatre), lighting design by York Kennedy (Awards: Dramalogue, San Diego Drama Critics Circle, Back Stage West Garland, AriZoni Theatre Award), sound design by Sara Huddleston (The Brothers Size, Mauritius, Goldfish, Magic Theatre; Macbeth, Shotgun Players; The Shaker Chair, Encore Theatre Company) and Costume Design by Christine Crook (Oliver!, Berkeley Playhouse; Cryptogram, Shotgun Players; The Secret Garden, The Willows Theatre).
