Magic Theatre, San Francisco's premiere home for new plays, announces its 2009-2010 season of 4 new plays, including 3 world premieres.
The season opens with a pair of new plays from John Kolvenbach, one of America's freshest and finest theatrical voices. With Mr. Kolvenbach's rich gift of language and raw heart, Goldfish and the world premiere of Mrs. Whitney reveal singular characters at personal crossroads - bravely and ridiculously stepping outside of themselves - in search of possibility. This exciting theatrical diptych will play in rep and may be viewed on the same day during Special Kolvenbach Marathon evenings.

In January, one of the great renaissance men of the theatre joins Magic - Luis Alfaro, a Los Angeles based writer, poet, performance artist, director, producer, and MacArthur genius grant winner. In a perfect combination of California swagger, old school Catholicism, and Chicano back break, Mr. Alfaro re-dreams the Oedipus tale through a contemporary lens in his world premiere play Oedipus el Rey.
The season concludes with the indelible conjuring of Lydia Stryk. Ms. Stryk's world premiere play An Accident is both visceral playground and emotional minefield. With violent precision, savage imagery, and theatrical vitality, Stryk intimately explores the world of recovery between an accident perpetrator and victim.

Magic is also pleased to welcome Theresa Rebeck back for a special event on December 7th. The Rendezvous with Theresa Rebeck is an intimate evening including readings of her one-act plays and short stories, a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres hour, and conversation with the playwright. Back by popular demand, the readings will star the cast of Ms. Rebeck's hit play Mauritius, which closed Magic's 2008-2009 Season.

Founded in 1967, Magic Theatre is one of the most prominent theatres in the nation solely dedicated to development and production of new plays. Magic Theatre plays and playwrights have won numerous awards, including Pulitzer Prizes, Kennedy Center Award, NAACP Image Award, Obie Awards, Pen-West Awards, Bay Critics Circle Awards and Los Angeles Drama-Logue Awards. The list of playwrights whose works have premiered at the Magic reads like a "Who's Who of American Theatre": Sam Shepard, David Mamet, Paula Vogel, Nilo Cruz, Charles Mee, Anne Bogart and Rebecca Gilman. In addition to its production calendar, Magic Theatre is also instrumental in the development of works in the Bay Area and beyond. GOLDFISH
A heartbreaking comedy by John Kolvenbach, directed by Loretta Greco
How do we become who we are? A young man raises his father and then leaves home. He meets a young woman who undoes him. She has her own story (including a mother who is a force of nature). We raise our children to leave us, but what happens when they do?

Previews: 10/7/09 - 10/13/09
Press/Opening Night: 10/14/09
Runs Through: 11/8/09

MRS. WHITNEY (world premiere)
A comedy about heartbreak written and directed by John Kolvenbach

What happens when a cynic by trade takes to the road in the hopes of reuniting with her one true (albeit messy) love? When her most prized possession leaves the nest, Margaret Whitney reluctantly chooses to follow her heart. In Mrs. Whitney, a wonderfully wicked and hilarious sequel to Goldfish, a woman of a certain age drops her armor long enough to reveal her true romantic core.

*Goldfish and Mrs. Whitney may be seen back to back during Special Kolvenbach Marathon evenings or as two separate events during the course of the run. Don't miss this delicious theatrical diptych!

Previews: 10/21/09 - 10/26/09
Press/Opening Night: 10/27/09
Runs Through: 11/22/09

OEDIPUS EL REY (world premiere)
A reimagined classic by Luis Alfaro, directed by Loretta Greco

Do you believe in destiny? Bringing his unique Chicano swagger to us with the world premiere of Oedipus el Rey, Luis Alfaro re-dreams the Oedipus tale through a contemporary lens. This epic tale begins below the Golden Gate Bridge and winds its way down California's dusty Highway 99 heading south toward the City of Angels

Press/Opening Night: 2/3/10
Runs Through: 2/28/10

AN ACCIDENT (world premiere)
A bold new drama by Lydia Stryk

When a woman is critically injured in an accident, can the same man who almost took her life save her? There are encounters in life that take you somewhere you've never been and never meant to go. Lydia Stryk writes an extraordinary play about recovery in which victim and perpetrator do more far more dancing than talking.
