The Aurora Theatre Company ushers in the holidays with the West Coast Premiere of Joan Ackermann's Gilded-Age romantic comedy Ice Glen Nov. 3 - Dec. 10, directed by Barbara Oliver.
"If a poem is written in the woods but no one reads it, does it make a sound? Set in 1919 at a once-thriving Berkshire estate,
Ice Glen traces a triangle of love and infatuation between Dulce Bainbridge, the widowed proprietress of the mansion, erudite Atlantic Monthly editor
Peter Woodburn, and the estate's reclusive poet/gardener Sarah, whom Woodburn pursues (at the behest of
Edith Wharton) for permission to publish her poetry," states press notes, "Once in the Berkshires, Woodburn, who is in full control at his desk, finds himself completely out of control in this new bucolic setting. He is inept at dealing with the young idyllic poetess; the staff of eccentric servants; and the vulnerable Dulce, who is more than willing to receive his attentions."
Filled with gentle humor and a deep understanding of human nature,
Ice Glen is Ackermann at her best with this warm, humorous look at the connections between the worlds of art, society, and Mother Nature.
Ice Glen stars Zehra Berkman, Douglas B. Giorgis, Lauren Grace, Marvin C. Greene, Julien Lopez-Morillas, and
Jessica Powell.
