Stanley Yelnats's family has a history of bad luck.  When he is accused of a crime he didn't commit, the judge offers him the option of going to jail or a juvenile detention camp. Having never been to summer camp, Stanley chose Camp Green Lake, where his punishment is to dig holes all day with the other kids.  The warden claims that this pointless labor builds character, but she is really using the boys to dig for loot buried by the Wild West outlaw Kissin' Kate Barlow.  While Stanley digs holes, he's also digging for clues to his own mystery and the mystery of Camp Green Lake.

Holes won both the 1999 Newbery Medal and 1998 National Book Award for Young People's Literature award. In 2003, Disney released a film version written by Louis Sachar and starring Sigourney Weaveras the Warden, Jon Voight and Mr, Sir, and Shia LaBeouf as Stanley.
