On your marks, get set, GO! Marin Theatre Company brings the spirit of sportsmanship, friendship, and living in the moment to its magical production of Brendan Murray's Hare & Tortoise. MTC's third Family Series show this season features slow and steady Tortoise, versus speedy and impatient Hare, racing to understand that determination and will for success truly matter in life. Directed by MTC's Director of Theatre for Youth and Communities Courtney Helen Grile, this light hearted, fun-filled production will have little ones and their parents cheering for both Hare and Tortoise to succeed in their journey. The excitement and warmth of this classic tale will have the audience's hearts racing for an encore.
From the Director, Courtney Helen Grile
"I'm overjoyed to bring this adaptation of the well-known story of The Tortoise & the Hare from Aesop's Fables to Marin. Brendan Murray's adaptation (Hare & Tortoise) embraces not only the slow and steady nature that Tortoise possesses, it makes space for the energy and excitement inherent in Hare. I was particularly excited to direct this play because it illustrates that there is a time and place for both silly and sensible while mirroring the wonder, adventure, and uncertainties that come along with growing up."
Brendan Murray grew up in Salford, Lancashire and graduated in Drama from Huddersfield Polytechnic in 1978. He then trained as an actor at Drama Studio London and worked in regional repertory, commercial touring, fringe and young people's theatre. In 1997 he was awarded an Arts Council Bursary and nominated for a Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for Best Children's Play and was runner-up for the John Whiting Award in 2000. In 2001, he won The Brian Way Award, and in 2009 and again in 2012 The Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for Best Play: Children & Young People for Hare & Tortoise. This award-winning production has since toured Great Britain, greater Europe and the United States capturing the attention and imagination of young audiences.
Young, excitable Hare wants nothing more in this world than to race his friend--the older, slower Tortoise. While Hare speeds through daily life and does everything he can to make the time pass faster, Tortoise slows down and takes her time, whether doing chores or having fun. Hare and Tortoise is a fun, fast (and slow) show about friendship, the passing of time and the excitement of growing up.
