Broadway By The Bay, the Peninsula's premier musical theatre company, presents the hilariously entertaining HAIRSPRAY, running Thursday, April 5 through Sunday, April 22, at the company's home, the historic Fox Theatre in Redwood City (2215 Broadway Street, Redwood City). Press night is scheduled for Friday, April 6, 2012 at 8:00. Tickets for HAIRSPRAY range in price from $20 - $48 and are on sale now at Broadway By The Bay Box Office (851 Burlway Road, Suite 300, Burlingame), by phone at 650-579-5565 and on the Web at www.broadwaybythebay.org.  Special youth, student, senior and group pricings are available.

The Tony award-winning musical is set in 1962 Baltimore where change is in the air, and Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion – to dance. Tracy wins a spot on the local TV dance program, overnight finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity, and rallies against racial segregation.

"Hairspray is frothing with energy - full of vibrant momentum and youthful perspective. Inspired by the actions and fearlessness of a determined young lady, this show embarks on a journey that promotes tolerance, overwhelms you with humor and ultimately encourages head-bopping, toe-tapping and the occasional shimmy-shake!" says Amanda Folena, Broadway By The Bay's new Artistic Director, who is directing the show.

Leading the cast is Victoria Morgan as Tracy Turnblad, the loveable plus-size heroine.  Morgan won rave reviews for her performances in the role with two previous productions, including at Contra Costa Musical Theatre, for which she just received a Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle award nomination. Playing opposite Morgan will be Cole Grissom in the role of Edna Turnblad, Tracy's supportive mother whose wit, humor and understanding are as big as her voluptuous physique.

With book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman,Hairspray delights audiences with its 1960's themes and songs.  The show, which won 8 Tony's including Best Musical and inspired a major motion picture, includes many swingingly-soulful numbers, such as "Good Morning Baltimore," "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and the crowd-pleasing "You Can't Stop The Beat."

The 2012 season is the second for Broadway By The Bay at the 1250-seat Fox Theatre located in the heart of downtown Redwood City.  The historic theatre is located in close proximity to a wide selection of popular restaurants and bars, as well as several nearby public parking areas and a Cal Train stop, making it convenient for theatergoers to enjoy pre-show dining or post-show libations.
