Golden State Theater Productions Presents: "RENT" January 29-31, February 4-7. Castro Valley Center for the Arts 19501 Redwood Road, Castro Valley

For the first time on an East Bay stage, the musical RENT opens January 29 at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts, presented by the Golden State Theatre Company. This is the third program of the Castro Valley Arts Foundation 2009-2010 Subscription Series.

RENT opened off-Broadway January 25, 1996, just one night after the tragic death of its creator, Jonathan Larson. An immediate sensation, it moved to Broadway in April where it had a 12 year run. It garnered many awards, most notably four Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize. Time called it a "breakthrough" and the New York Times deemed RENT "an exhilarating landmark."

Loosely based on Puccini's "La Boheme," RENT is a rock musical about seven young artists who struggle to survive and create in New York's BohemIan East village in the late 1980's. The show's songs range from rock ‘n roll to quiet ballads. Popular around the world, RENT has been translated into 15 languages in 25 countries. In 2005, the musical was also adapted into a motion picture that featured most of the original cast members. The production helped to increase the popularity of musical theater amongst younger generations and led to the term "rent-head," as a name for those fans desperate for tickets who camped out for hours to secure them.

This production of RENT is directed and choreographed by TEd Curry. Tim Hanson is the Music Director. RENT features actors from all over California.

Come and experience "Seasons of Love" or yourself, and see what all the excitement's about!

Due to mature themes, some parents may find the subject matter unsuitable for children.

Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $15-$29 and can be purchased by phone at 510-889-8961, at the CFA Box Office (Th/F 3-5pm), Castro Valley Adult School (M-F 9am-4pm, Sat 8:30-11am), or online at www.cvartsfoundation.org.
