A particular highlight is the Sunday, July 15, 2pm performance in Niles (Niles Town Plaza, Fremont). Niles boasts a wonderful train museum and a spectacular silent film museum. The performance will be part of a day-long festival including music in the town plaza; "Charlie Chaplin days" will also be taking place on the day of this performance (where people come to celebrate Chaplin, often dressed in costume). The Niles Performance is made possible by the generous support of Niles Main Street Association and the Alameda County Library Foundation.
Port Costa (Saturday, July 21, 1pm at the Port Costa Schoolhouse) is also worth a day trip, for the many hiking/biking options followed (or preceded) by a meal at the Bull Valley Roadhouse (one of the San Francisco Chronicle's Top 100 restaurants of the Bay Area). After eating, explore local artist Wendy Addison' s Theatre of Dreams and the antique shops (both in Port Costa and nearby Crockett). The town itself has often been written about as a hidden gem of the Bay Area, and truly feels like a time capsule of the Victorian era. The Port Costa performance is sponsored by the Port Costa Conservation Society.
Shiver We Timbers! is devised by the ensemble and directed by Rebecca Longworth, with Music Direction by Casey Robbins. The cast includes Sam Bertken, Paul Collins, Joan Howard, Casey Robbins and Marlene Yarosh.
"The Peripatetic Players -- like so many of us -- are fascinated by pirates," said Founding Producer Rebecca Longworth. "While of course we know that real-life pirates were violent outlaws, their fictional counterparts (beloved by millions in stories such as Treasure Island, Peter Pan, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean films and more) have captured our imaginations throughout the ages with whimsy and derring-do. We revel in the tales of intrepid pirate crews banding together to create their own communities, away from the cruel judgement of oppressive governments and rigid societal strictures. In our fantasies, pirates are misfits and adventurers who have their own codes of justice, and who create and re-create themselves as powerful, larger-than-life characters who lived the way they wished. When you 'pick-ye-own' pirate adventure, you'll get to honor this spirit of communal adventure and bold individuality!"
The creative team also includes Joan Howard (Visual Design Lead & FluxWagon Designer), Megan Hillard (Scenic Painter) and Addie McDowell (Costume Designer).
Shiver We Timbers! will be performed on FluxWagon, The Peripatetic Players' folding mobile stage that is set up by the ensemble shortly before each show. As with previous Peripatetic Players productions, the Players will playfully interact with the audience before, during and after their show. Shiver We Timbers!, based on pirate stories from history, pop culture, and myth, features a structure inspired by "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, and original songs as well as new takes on traditional sea shanties.
The adventure begins when the Players set theatrical sail on the high seas, but when they can't decide what course to take, it's up to the audience to weigh in. The audience is asked to "choose their own adventure" at key points in the narrative, which will alter the story and outcome -- sometimes resulting in the epic demise of one or all Players, or the audience themselves. And like a choose-your-own adventure book, the story can pick up again at a different spot to keep the fun going. Samuel Peaches Peripatetic Players are: Samuel Peaches (Casey Robbins), Princess Gwen (Marlene Yarosh), Guy Hank (Paul Collins), Thumper (Joan Howard), Meekins (Sam Bertken), and Madame Directrix (Rebecca Longworth, who also directs). Shiver We Timbers! is presented in association with San Francisco Recreation and Parks and Berkeley Parks and Recreation.
The production is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Niles Main Street Association, the Alameda County Library Foundation, Alameda Recreation and Parks, the Oakland Dept of Parks, Recreation and Youth Development, the Port Costa Conservation Society, the Santa Clara City Library and the City of Pleasanton.
Idiot String is fiscally sponsored by Independent Arts & Media, a San Francisco nonprofit organization dedicated to building community through media and the arts. The company's annual summer tours with the Peripatetic Players are made possible through individual donations made either online or in person at each show, with support from Theatre Bay Area CA$H Creates. The East Bay Fund For Artists at the East Bay Community Foundation is matching gifts made to Idiot String through July 15, 2018.
