The title in French is A L’ouest which literally means ‘to the west.’ It is an idiomatic expression in French for the mental state of being kind’ve out there – in perhaps a euphoria or fantasy world where one’s grip on reality seems be a bit thin. In it, U.S. audiences will find themes that will feel quite familiar – the down side of anti-depressants, a powerful patriarch with Alzheimer’s, and the super charged dynamic of an upper class family sorting financial devastation and loss after the collapse of global markets. But what constitutes family these days? Is the son of your ex-wife’s second husband, and his wife, entitled to an opinion?
