San Jose's acclaimed dance center, Dance Theatre International, takes audiences on a wild ride down the rabbit hole with a spectacular multi-media presentation of ADVENTURES OF ALICE, a charming, ballet adaptation of Lewis Carroll's beloved classic Alice in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking Glass. Directed by international dancer Maggie Ferla, this delightful performance features nearly 100 Dance Theatre International ballet students in a fanciful tour of the marvels of Wonderland. ADVENTURES OF ALICE will be presented twice, June 21, 2009, 3pm & 7pm, at the Evergreen Valley Performing Arts Center, 3300 Quimby Road, San Jose. ADVENTURES OF ALICE, a visual feast with an original film backdrop, sends the audience on a growing and shrinking adventure with Alice through the rabbit hole and into the Mad Hatter's very merry unbirthday party for a spot of tea. Alice finds her way through Wonderland, stumbling upon dancing flowers, flittering butterflies, cavorting caterpillars, and encounters with Wonderland favorites such as the Walrus and the Carpenter, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and many more. This whimsical panorama is highlighted by a vivid cinematic backdrop, a film setting for this ballet adventure created by Madeline Hollander.
The director/choreographer for ADVENTURES OF ALICE, Maggie Ferla, has toured extensively throughout the world, performing principle roles in a wide variety of classic ballet and contemporary dance styles. Ferla has danced professionally with San Francisco Ballet, Bejart Ballet and the Hamburg Ballet, among others. ADVENTURES OF ALICE includes contributions by choreographic collaborators Maria Lamance (Moving Arts Dance, Peninsula Ballet Theatre, Huckabay McAllister Dance), Cody Gibson (California Ballet, San Jose Youth Ballet, Peninsula Ballet), and Emily Thai, who has been studying at Dance Theatre International since the age of 5 and now teaches ballet and tap at DTI's Open Dance Program. Lighting design is by Carolyn Foot, whose talents light up the stages of companies such as Bus Barn, Mission City Opera and Palo Alto Players, with original cinematography by Madeline Hollander, director of several music videos and a dance film, and former dancer at the Los Angeles Ballet.
Dance Theatre International attracts world-class, professional dancers who teach and mentor both dance classes and youth performance groups such as the San Jose Youth Ballet, whose mission is to bring high caliber, classical ballet to aspiring young dancers in the Silicon Valley. Ballet students from DTI have received scholarships and acceptances to American Ballet Theater, School of American Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, and Kirov Academy.
